Why your business doesn't show up on Google Maps (and how to fix it)
Customers search "near me" every day. If your shop isn't on Google Maps, they walk into your competitor's. Here is why it happens and the exact steps to fix it.
Picture a customer in Dasmariñas who types "bakery near me" on their phone. Google shows three shops on a map. They tap the first one, read a few reviews and walk over. If your bakery isn't one of those three, that customer never even knew you existed.
This happens to thousands of good businesses every day. The good news: most of the reasons are easy to fix, and fixing them costs nothing.
How Google decides who shows up
Google says it ranks local businesses on three things:
- Relevance: does your listing clearly match what the person searched for?
- Distance: how close are you to the person searching?
- Prominence: how well known and trusted are you? Reviews, photos and mentions around the web all count.
You can't move your shop closer to every customer, but you can do a lot about relevance and prominence.
Reason 1: You don't have a Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that puts you on the map. Without one, Google has nothing to show. Go to google.com/business, sign in with your Gmail and add your business. It's free.
Reason 2: Your profile isn't verified
Many owners start a profile and never finish the verification step. Unverified profiles rarely show up. Google may ask you to verify by phone, email, a video of your shop or a postcard. Do it as soon as the option appears.
Reason 3: You picked the wrong category
Your main category is one of the strongest signals you control. A "Restaurant" won't show up well for "lugawan near me". Choose the most specific category that fits, then add two or three secondary ones.
Reason 4: Your information is incomplete or different everywhere
Fill in everything: hours, phone number, address or service area, website, products and a short description. Make sure your name, address and phone number match exactly on your Facebook Page, your website and anywhere else you're listed. Mixed details confuse Google.
Reason 5: You have few reviews, or old ones
A shop with 40 recent reviews looks more trustworthy than one with 3 reviews from 2022, to Google and to customers. Ask happy customers every week. A small sign at the counter with a QR code that goes straight to your review page works well. (We wrote a whole guide on getting more reviews the right way.)
Reason 6: No photos, no posts
Listings with real photos get more clicks. Add photos of your storefront (so people can find you), your products, your team and your space. Post an update or promo at least once a week. It tells Google you're active.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is completely free. You only need a Google account, such as your Gmail.
How long does it take to appear on Google Maps?
After you verify your profile, it can show up within a few days, though it may take a few weeks to rank well. Complete information, photos and steady reviews speed things up.
Can I be on Google Maps without a physical store?
Yes. If you deliver or visit customers, set up a service-area business. You list the cities you serve and hide your home address.
Why does my competitor show up and I don't?
Usually because their profile is more complete, they picked a better category, or they have more recent reviews and photos. Distance from the searcher also matters, and you can't control that one.
Do I need a website to be on Google Maps?
No, but a website helps. Google uses it to understand your business better, and customers who check your site are more likely to contact you.
